Which Schools at Nalanda are offering admissions for 2017-18?

For the Academic year 2017-18, Admissions are offered in three Schools:

  • School of Historical Studies (SHS),
  • School of Ecology and Environment Studies (SE&ES)
  • School of Buddhist studies, Comparative Religion, and philosophy

What degrees are being offered?

Both Schools offer a Master’s degree. SE&ES offers the option of either an MA or an MSc degree depending upon the electives chosen by the student.

  • School of Ecology and Environment Studies offers either MA or MSc degree
  • School of Historical Studies and School of Buddhist studies, Comparative Religion, and philosophy offers MA degree.

When will the other Schools begin their operations?

The School of Buddhist studies, Comparative Religion, and philosophy will be operational from session 2016 and other proposed schools will begin their operations in a phased manner in next few years. There will be advanced notification for opening of each forth coming school.

What are the collaborations for Research?

Nalanda University has established connections for collaborative research with institutions around the world. Some of these are:

How are teaching and research conducted at School of Ecology & Environment Studies?

The academic calendar is divided into two semesters each of twenty weeks duration. The first semester starts on the first Monday of August and ends in the third week of December. The second semester starts on the first Monday of January and ends on the third week of May.

Research activities in the School are driven by its interdisciplinary character. Diverse perspectives are discussed and mutually developed. Through its evolving research agenda, the School aims to work towards meaningful and practicable solutions for pressing environmental concerns.

The students are required to undertake a summer internship at an organization of their choice at the end of first year of their study. They are also required to complete a thesis at the end of the second year to obtain the degree.

For pursuing masters in the School of Ecology and Environment Studies, is it necessary to have a related background?

The courses at the School are designed for students coming from disparate backgrounds in social science, humanities, engineering, and natural sciences. Anyone coming from one of these background can apply for the masters’ programme at School of Ecology and Environment Studies.

What is the application fee?

The application fee for the academic year 2017-18 is INR 500, which is to be paid online.

In case an offer is made, do I have to pay anything at the time of confirmation of admission?

The admission fees of 6000 (INR) or 100 USD has to be paid while confirming the admission. This fees is nonrefundable.

Is the fees structure different for Indians and Foreign students?

The fee structure is the same for all students.

Does Nalanda University offer financial aid to prospective students?

Only those students to whom an offer of admission is finally made will be considered for financial aid. There are two kinds of financial Aids i.e. work study and tuition fee waiver.

What is the Tuition fee waiver scheme?

The admission policy at Nalanda University is fully need blind. It is assumed that the admitted candidates at NU are meritorious enough to be considered for pursuing their studies at Nalanda, while financial assistance, in the form of tuition fees waiver, is awarded on the basis of need only.

What is the work study program at NU?

Work study is a need-based financial aid award. A student may be considered for work study at the recommendations of Financial Assistance Committee. The work-study Programmes at Nalanda University is primarily offered to underwrite the financial obligations of a student towards the University.

Work study awards are available during the academic year and it may be offered during summer vacation too. During work study, a student has to work for a specified number of hours and for her or his services towards University, she or he is paid on hourly basis.

What are the career prospects after pursuing MA/MSc degree at School of Ecology and Environment Studies?

An Ecology and Environmental Studies degree equips you with essential skills that could lead to a job in the environment sector in the area of research (higher university degree), active community engagement (NGO), enterprises (consultancy, management, etc.), administration (government policy), action (journalism) etc.

What are the career prospects after pursuing MA degree at School of Historical Studies?

In addition to teaching, research, and academic careers, students will be able to find meaningful employment in the corporate and government sectors, media and journalism, diplomacy, international organizations and museums.

Is there any PhD option available at NU in School of Historical Studies?

The School is developing a PhD degree programme, with a plan to solicit applications from candidates interested in pursuing a PhD in the School, from 2017-18 onward. The major research interests of the faculty encompass local, regional and global environmental issues, focusing on thrust areas of the school.

What makes me a good candidate for NU?

Is there any age limit for joining the Schools?

There is no age limit. If you fulfill our eligibility criteria, please apply. Admissions are based solely on academic merit.

I presently hold a Master’s degree. Can I apply for a Master’s programme at Nalanda University?

Yes, you can.

I have not done History, would I be eligible to apply for the School of Historical Studies?

As long as you have a recognized Bachelor’s Degree in any stream with minimum 55% or equivalent marks, you are eligible to apply.

I have not done mathematics and/ or sciences in my under-graduate programme. Can I apply for a Master’s at SE&ES?

Yes, you can apply for the programme. You will have to be prepared to take some basic courses in science and statistics as advised by your faculty mentor.

Can I apply for the post graduate course without the under-graduate result announcement?

Yes, but the admission will be conditional. Only the final year appearing candidates are eligible to apply for admission.

I don’t have any written work. Can I apply for a Master’s Degree?

Nalanda University is a research university. Our Master’s programme requires writing skills, critical thinking and exposition of ideas. If you do not have a writing sample from your course work, you could write something that you think best demonstrates these skills.

What are the eligibility criteria for Graduate Admissions?

For Indian students:

A minimum of three years Bachelor’s degree (10+2+3) is required.

In Bachelor’s degree, the candidate must have secured 55% marks from any Indian University recognized by UGC/AICTE.

For under-graduates from all other countries:

A Bachelor’s Degree with minimum 15 years of prior studies i.e. in 10+2+3 pattern with a GPA of at least 2.2 or above on a 4 point scale or equivalent grade if other grade point is used.

What is the English proficiency level requirement?

The University requires all applicants to demonstrate a high level of competence in the English language, as all courses are conducted in English. Adherence to this requirement is strict. Students must be able to demonstrate that they are able to communicate in English at a level suitable to the Graduate Programs.

Can I apply to more than one programme?

Should I post my application and supplementary documents?

The entire application process for admissions is paperless and online in keeping with the University’s commitment to sustainability. All applications should be submitted electronically. Supplementary documents can be uploaded to the Additional Information section of the online application form. Please do not post or mail paper copies of application materials or supplementary documents unless specifically requested.

Can I submit my application before all of my recommendations or official test scores are received?

Yes. You should submit your application as soon as you complete it. Our admissions office will send recommendation requests to your referees and will add recommendation letters and official test scores to your application as they are received.

How many Letters of Recommendation are required?

We require at least two Letters of Recommendation (LORs) from persons with an academic background, who have taught you in College/ University. The LORs must reach the School as per the application deadline.

Should the written assignments cover a specific topic?

The written assignments may not have a specific topic. The assignments should be chosen from the written work submitted at your college/ university like tutorials or academic papers/ articles worked on. This work should reflect your ability to compose academic writing; demonstrated capacity for critical and creative thinking; and good communication skills.

What if my transcripts come from a non-English speaking university or the university does not use the same grading system?

If your transcripts are not in English, you must provide a notarized translation of that transcript, as well as a copy of the transcript in the original language. There are several online resources for students to use in order to evaluate and translate their college credentials for Indian institutions, including:

Any other points to note for online applications?

Read the application instructions and requirements carefully before starting the application.

While uploading documents, make sure your documents are legible and are of optimum size. Typically the documents should not exceed 1500 KB (1.5 MB) in size.

Will I be able to work while I am at Nalanda?

No, the Master’s program are full-time. You can’t be employed by any other organization or individual.

Are there any reservations for the students of Bihar or Nalanda?

Academic criteria are the sole basis of admission, but of course, we welcome applications from Bihar or Nalanda.

Does the University assist in job placements of the graduating students?

The University has a specialized Career Resource Cell who would cater to the internship and placement needs of the students.

What support can I expect with my visa process?

Nalanda will assist you with your visa, issue necessary letters, but cannot assure a visa for the students.

Does Nalanda University provide any medical facility?

All the students of NU are covered under Group Medical Coverage for treatment in all the leading and major hospitals across India. Students are also covered under Group Personal Accident Policy. In addition, the University has a visiting doctor on its rolls and few more on its panel who are available on call, in case of emergency.

What laboratory facilities available?

University has a computer lab equipped with latest technology and all the necessary research tools like, GIS, Metlab, MiniTab etc. The students of different Schools also use the respective laboratories to practice what they learn in classroom.

What is the importance of Statement of Purpose (SoP) in the Application Form.

SoP is one of the important parameters for evaluating a candidate for admissions at University. So it is advisable that the candidate must devote some time while writing the SoP. To take the application to the next step your Statement of Purpose should reflect on the following points/questions
