Entre Nous series for Spring 2016 began with a seminar presentation by Dr. Prabhakar Sharma on Monday, January 11, 2016. Dr. Sharma is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Ecology and Environment Studies at Nalanda University. The title for his talk was: “Nanoparticles in the Soil Environment”
In this presentation, Dr. Prabhakar Sharma discussed his ongoing work on the engineered nanoparticles (ENPs). His work engages with the understanding of fate and transport of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) released from selected commercial products in the Indian or similar environment (e.g., soil, wetlands, aquifers) before widespread releases occur. ENPs are defined as having at least 1 dimension in the order of 1-100 nm. Engineered Nanoparticles (ENPs) are being used in numerous consumer products worldwide, including sunscreens, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, food, food packaging, and clothing industries.
His research in particular deals with the new insights into the mobility of ENPs released from commercial products in the subsurface environment under relevant conditions in a range of Indian soils, which will then assist in determining soil, groundwater, and sediment standards and source water protection criteria for the regulation of ENP usage, disposal, and remediation. According to Dr. Sharma, this research will allow government and policy makers to extend the experimental results beyond the experimental conditions to make long-term predictions model for the event of spill/leakage of ENPs with distinct nano-sized particles in the nature and environment.
Entre Nous (“Between Us”) is a forum for critical but friendly conversations during which members of the university community (faculty, students, and other interested members) present work-in-progress related to the study of culture and nature broadly conceived.
