Environmental Lab

Environmental laboratory involves the analysis of air, water and soil for chemical species impacting ecological, agricultural, health and safety areas. Tests are performed for teaching students to evaluate the air and water quality, soil types, soil's nutrient potential and transport. The lab is equipped to simulate fate and transport of dissolved and nano- & micro-size contaminants through the development of understanding of natural hydrogeological systems. The lab is equipped with various equipments, such as: Total Carbon & Nitrogen Analyzer, Kjeldahl Apparatus, Heavy metal analyzer, Double beam UV/Vis Spectrophotometer, Stereo zoom Microscope, Digital camera, GPS unit, Binoculars, Heavy duty centrifuge, Double distillation unit, Ultrasonic cleaner, Precision micro- and macro-balance, Fraction collector, Peristaltic pump, Column setup, Soil sampler, Soil moisture/temperature sensor, Muffle furnace, Hot air & Microwave oven, Large Fridge, COD & BOD incubator, Digital colony counter, Digital orbital shaker, Analytical instruments (pH, EC, TDS, DO analyzer), etc. Key research areas include soil, water, and gas contamination, flowing fluid electrical conductivity logging, capacity of subsurface water resources, top soil & nutrient losses, etc.

2. Climate Station

Weather monitoring station installed at Nalanda University is equipped for measuring atmospheric conditions to study the weather and climate. This Wireless Weather Station is connected with datalogger and measures of following parameters: wind speed, wind direction, rain bucket, solar radiation, temperature & humidity with Wireless data logger, and solar panel mounting accessories.
In addition, there is a collaboration with Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for sharing weather and climatic data.

3. Environmental Modelling Lab

We offer state-of- the-art environmental modelling and software tools as the basis for an ecosystem approach to environmental management and ecosystem scale management to address specific environmental challenges. It is possible to address a broad range of research questions using qualitative and quantitative tools with a combination of theoretical modelling, statistical modelling, laboratory experiments, and fieldwork in the research activities. Some of the softwares taught to students include MODFLOW, Aqtesolv, SPSS, R, MATLAB, MINITAB, PRESENCE, DIVA GIS, Q-GIS and ECOSIM. We apply various environmental models to complex data sets collected through field studies and large scale databases which are then tested for reliable predictions of ecological and environmental impacts to assess measures and prioritize investments to decision making and policy framing. These includes varying hydrological and climatic conditions and socioecological complexities from simple interactions to complex ecosystem models at the regional and global scale involving processes that are spatially and temporally complex and dynamic. Our regional approach to answering research questions through environmental modelling contributes to developing a sound scientific practice that integrates patterns, exchanges, and human impacts to understand and manage broad regions. We collaborate strongly with researchers and with scientists at other institutions where such team approach helps advance basic scientific understanding and provide knowledge essential for effective environmental management.

4. Geoinformatics Lab Facility

Geoinformatics lab at Nalanda University has state of the art hardware (Handheld GPS, Topo sheets by SOI, Mirror and Pocket Stereoscope, Aerial photographs, Terrestrial stereo photos/images, etc) and software (Proprietary GIS and Image processing software, Open sources viz. QGIS, GRASS, etc) for teaching and research. Along with powerful machines for spatio- temporal data analysis, high quality monitors for Geovisualization to allied equipment such as handheld GPS units, and others. The lab has licensed multiple proprietary software such as ArcGIS 10x and ERDAS Imagine which are standard for teaching and industry. Along with these software, we strongly encourage use of open source software and teach using it with available open source software which are evolving and changing trends in Geoinformatics.

These Labs possess various Satellite data, GIS data, Socio-Economic data and climate data. These Lab facilities are also avail to accomplish research projects of students and funded research projects.
